Lord Karchapeswarar Temple


Karchapeswarar Temple located in Kanchipuram is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Karchapeswarar. In this temple, siva appears as being worshipped by vishnu in the form of turtle.


History of the Temple

Karchapeswarar Temple is said to be built by Pallava Kings and later renovated by Vijayanagar Kings. The temple is also called Kachipedu in some inscriptions



Legend of the Temple

According to the legend Vishnu is believed to have worshipped Shiva in the form of a turtle, kurmemerali in Tamil. “Kacchapam” is a Sanskrit word for “Turtle”. Hence the name “Kacchapa Eswarar Temple”
