Temple History:

Tamil literature Malaipadukadam mentions that King Nannan visited this temple and worshipped the Lord in the 3rd Century.

Greatness Of Temple:
According to belief, that Lord Shiva placed His feet first on this Parvadhamalai when He came to South from his Kailash Abode.
This is the only hill where devotees experience the light and guidance of the Lord even on dark new moon days. Some experience the darshan of Siddhas residing on the hill. The other significance is that the devotees can perform the abhishek and light the lamps themselves as followed in North Indian temples. According to the Regional History (Sthalapuranam), the devotee reaps the benefit of visiting all the Shiva temples on earth, once he/she visits this Parvadhamalai temple.
A one day pooja performed by the devotee in the temple is considered equal to the pujas he/she would be performing all the 365 days in a year. It is also said that this hill is a piece that fell here when Sri Anjaneya was carrying the Sanjeevini mount to Lanka.
The 3000 feet tall hill has seven types of steps with herbal breeze blowing for ever. They cure serious and prolonged diseases. Hundreds of Siddhas are living in the caves in the hill.
Fragrant smell of flowers in the sanctum sanctorum, the indescribable beauty of the Mother, flowing bright rays from Her cheeks during the nights, Her tall stature and looking as if coming towards the devotee and many miracle views are the facts contributing to the reputation of the Parvadhamalai temple.
As the Siddhas are believed to be flying round in the form of eagles in Tirukazhukundram, the visitor can notice three eagles flying round this hill also. Hundreds of devotees throng the place during the Chitra Poornima festival.
According to the Yoga Sastras, the human body takes the Kundalini to the Sahasrara in the head after crossing the six Aadhara Nadis below and enjoy the supreme bliss of Sadashiva. Similarly, the devotee reaches the top of the hill after passing through Kadaladi, Methagamalai, Kumarinettu malai, Kadaparai malai, Kanakachi Odai malai, Puttru malai, Kovil malai to worship Shiva-Parvathi and achieve wisdom.
It is said that the devotee will reap the benefit of a Kailash darshan if he/she visits this temple for 48 poornimas and Amavasya continuously and will be relieved of diseases however severe it may be

Thanks giving:

People perform abishek and offer Vastras to the Lord.

Prayers

Devotees visit the temple 5, 7 or 9 times and light lamps for recovery from business downturn, removal of obstacles in marriage talks

General Information:

Those visiting the temple should take with themselves food, drinking water, a torch light, oil to light the lamps and puja items. Besides the darshan of the Lord, they can also get the blessings of the Sadhus in the hill and it is considered that the darshan of the Lord in the hill top is but a gift brought from one’s previous birth (poorva janma).

Temple History
Recognizing the penance of Sage Vasishta on Lord Shiva, Indira sent his Kamadenu the divine cow with the sage.  Once, the cow delayed to pour the milk for puja.  The angry sage cursed it to become an ordinary cow losing its divine status.  He also suggested the cow to go to this place and worship Lord Shiva under the Vanni tree to recover its divinity.  Kamadenu poured the milk on the Lord and got back its original supremacy.  Hence, the Lord has the name Paalvanna Nather.  Paal in Tamil means milk.  When Sage Valmiki came there to worship Lord Shiva, Kamadhenu ran in fear pressing its feet on the head of the Shivalinga, the scar of which is still visible on the presiding deity.
Greatness Of Temple:
Sage Valmiki worshipped Lord and corrected himself from the ways of his past life as a robber.  Pleased with the sage, Lord Shiva appeared before him under the Vanni tree in the temple.  The place, as requested by the sage, was named after him.  The Vanni tree is in the prakara where Lord granted darshan to Sage Agasthya and Sage Valmiki.  This event forms part during the Panguni Brahmmotsava in the temple.

There are shrines for Muthukumarar praised by saint Arunagiriar in his Tirupugazh, three Shakti Vinayakas, 108 Shivalingas and Panchalingas.  Abishek to Lord is performed each day only after Gopuja – Puja to cow.   Lord is also known as Vanmikanathar, Vedapureeswarar, Amudheeswarar and Paalvanna Nathar.

Lord taught Sage Agasthya the medicinal qualities of herbals and the medicines for various diseases, hence is also praised as Marundeeswarar – Marundhu in Tamil means medicine and Eeaswara God – God of Medicines.

Lord facing west: Appayya Dikshithar, whose original works and commentaries on our sacred books  had enriched the Sanskrit literatures and the spiritual heritage of South during the twentieth century, was unable to have the darshan of Lord due to heavy floods.  He was able to see only the back of Lord.  He said to the Lord, “I came here to worship you with your face, can’t you oblige me.”  Moved by the prayer of Dikshithar, Lord Shiva turned west and granted darshan.  Only Lord Shiva shrine is facing west in the temple.  The shrine of Mother behind Lord’s shrine is facing south while the shrines of Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga are facing east

Thanks giving:
Devotees offer vastras to Lord and Mother
Prayers
Devotees perform milk abishek to Lord and consume the Vibuthi (sacred ash) Prasad for cure from prolonged illness and relief from sins.  Circumambulating the Vanni tree where Lord appeared leads the devotee to salvation.

Singers
The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Tirunavukkarasar and by Arunagiriar.   “Lord of Tiruvanmiyur appears before the devotee praising His endless merciful traits and removes the illusion in the dull mind.”            Saint Tirunavukkarasar.   This is the 25th temple in Thondai region praised in Thevaram hymns.
