Greatness Of Temple:
This is one of the 108 Divyadesas of
Perumal named Kaarvaanam located within the Ulagalanda Perumal temple. The other three temples within this temple
are Tiru Ooragam, Tiru Karagam and Tiru Neeragam. This is indeed a wonder in the temple history
of India that four temples are under one roof.
It is said that except Tiru Ooragam, other temple were separately
elsewhere and were brought together at a later stage.
It is also noteworthy that Saint
Tirumangai Azhwar had sung his Mangalasasanam hymn in one verse covering all
the temples. Of the 108 Divyadesas,
this is a temple so huge in size. Sri
Adisesha is considered very powerful granting desired boons to the devotees if
they pray wholeheartedly. Devotees
perform Tirumanjanam to Adisesha with porridge-payasam as nivedhana for child
boon.
Temple History
Emperor Mahabali though belonging to
Asura-demon community was a good natured person, a descendent of devout
Prahlada for whom Perumal took the Narasimha Avtar. He was equal only to himself in charity but
was proud of this quality. Pride is a
vice that destroys all the best in a person.
In order to teach him a lesson, Lord Perumal came to him as a dwarf and
sought three feet of land. Replying,
Mahabali said that what he could do with just three feet of land with His dwarf
feet. Mahabali’s Guru Shukra understood
that the visitor was but Lord Vishnu with a motive and advised the king to deny
the request of the dwarf. Mahabali
decided to offer the dwarf’s demand as he thought he would lose the benefit of
his earlier charities if he now denies the dwarf of his wish. He offered 3 feet land without reluctance.
Perumal grew tall, taller and tallest
and covered the whole earth by one foot and the world below-padala by the
second and asked Mahabali the space for the third foot. Mahabali had no hesitation to say that he had
his head for the third foot and offered it without any atom of hesitation. Lord pushed him down to Paadala Loka, the
world beneath the Earth. He only felt
said that as he had missed the darshan of the Lord scaling the world.
He set himself into severe penance on
Lord Vishnu seeking this darshan. Though
he succeeded in getting the darshan, as he was in Padala Loka, the darshan was
not complete. He again continued his
demand. Lord gave him the whole darshan
in the form of Adi Sesha. That is the
place now known as Tiru Ooragam. This
temple is on the left of the sanctum sanctorum of Ulagalanda Perumal.
