History

The name Thiruthangal has a fascinating background. It is here Mother Mahalakshmi performed penance to relieve the people from Banasura and urged the Lord to control him. The Lord responded to the penance of Mahalakshmi. Sri in Tamil means Thiru. Thangal in Tamil means staying. Thus came the name Thiru-Thangal. Banasura also prayed to Lord to accept his daughter Usha in marriage to his grandson Aniruddha. The Lord blessed everybody seeking his grace. This is the 48th among the 108 Divyadesas


Prayer

Marriage, children, education, wisdom, family prosperity, development in agriculture are the boons sought from Lord Nindra Narayanan.


Prayer commitments:
Offering a butter bath to the Lord, pure dried cloths to the mother, lighting lamps, offering Tulsi petals are undertaken by the devotees. Preparations offered to the Lord as nivedhana are distributed among the devotees. Feeding also is undertaken.

Speciality
The presiding deity Nindra Narayana Perumal is at one part of the temple in a standing pose facing east, while Mother Goddess in the other part. The Lord is also known as Deiveega Vasudevan and Thiruthangalappan. Mother Goddess is also known as Sengamala Thayar, Kamala Mahalakshmi, Anna Nayaki, Ananda Nayaki, Amirtha Nayaki. The Vimanam in the temple is very artistic built with high architectural skill and is called Somaschanda Vimanam.
Thirumangai Azhwar, Boodhathazhwar have sung the temple in their Mangalasasanams. The other holy spring in the temple are Bhaskara theertham, Papanasa theertham and Arjuna river.

Reputation
Thiruthangal is the holy place where the wedding of Lord Krishna’s grandson Aniruddha and Usha took place. The Lord appears in a majestic standing posture. This is the 48th among the 108 Divyadesas. It has a mention in the Tamil epic Silapathikaram.

Festivals
Pujas in the temple are performed for Mother Goddess first and only then to the Lord. 12 days Ani Brahmmotsavam (June-July), 5 day Chitra Poornima festival in April-May, 10 day summer festival (Vasanthotsavam in May-June), Krishna Jayanthi, Pavithra Utsav, Navarathri, Karthikai Deepam, Vaikunda Ekadasi, Koorathazhwar festival, Panguni Wedding festival in March – April, Purattasi Garuda Sevai (September-October), Tamil and English New Year days, Pongal and Deepavali are the festivals so grandly celebrated in Thiruthangal temple. Among the festivals, the visit of Lord Nindra Narayanan to Srivilliputhur temple on the 5th day of the Adipooram festival (July-August) is a unique event.

Location:
Thiruthangal is 24 Kms from Virudhunagar, 4 from Sathur. Devotees visiting Thiruthangal may find convenient lodgings in the nearby Sivakasi Town, where the charges range from Rs. 100 to Rs. 300.
Conveyance facilities are available from Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar. Nearest railway stations are Sivakasi and Virudhunagar and the airport Madurai.
